Ever wondered what "HB" or "2B" on a pencil actually means? Pencil grades tell you how hard or soft the graphite is — and choosing the right one makes a big difference. Here's a simple guide.

The H–B Scale

Pencils are graded on a scale of hardness:

  • H = Hard — lighter, finer lines.
  • B = Black (soft) — darker, bolder lines.
  • HB — right in the middle; the standard all-rounder.
  • F — fine point, a bit harder than HB.

Hard Pencils (H, 2H, 4H…)

  • Lighter, crisp lines that smudge less.
  • The higher the number, the harder and lighter.
  • Best for: technical drawing, light sketching, fine detail.

Soft Pencils (B, 2B, 4B, 6B…)

  • Darker, richer lines that shade beautifully.
  • The higher the number, the softer and darker.
  • Best for: shading, sketching, and expressive drawing.

Which Grade for What?

  • Everyday writing: HB.
  • Exams (and OMR sheets): 2B is often recommended.
  • Sketching: a range from 2H to 6B.
  • Technical/light work: 2H–H.

A Tip for Artists

A basic sketching set (say 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B) covers everything from light outlines to deep shadows. Build from there.
